The Truffle Game

Feeling Good About Feeling Good

I want to introduce a game I created a number of years ago. It’s called The Truffle Game.

The idea is simple: imagine someone offering you a chocolate—or a whole box of chocolates. There’s this wonderful feeling, this little spark of delight. If chocolate isn’t your thing, imagine something else that would light you up when someone offers it. That feeling of “Oh, lovely.”

The Truffle Game is about giving that feeling to someone else—not with chocolate, but with words. You say something to someone that lands in their system like a chocolate truffle. It makes them light up inside.

That can be a little scary. What if you offer someone a truffle and they don’t want it? What if you say something and it makes them cry, and then you feel uncomfortable because they’re having such a big, beautiful experience?

But that’s part of the beauty of this practice: being willing to give someone something that feels really good in their system, and just letting them enjoy it—letting yourself enjoy them enjoying it. And then letting them give you one in return. Letting them say something that makes you brighten, that makes you bloom a little bit.

It’s okay if it doesn’t land the first time. You can try again. You can get feedback. You can keep playing until you land one.

To me, this is such a sweet, generous game to play. You can play it with a stranger—I’ll sometimes tell someone walking down the street, “That is an amazing outfit,” and we both smile and move on. You can play it in more intimate settings too—with a partner, a friend, someone you care about.

That’s the Truffle Game. I hope you enjoy it completely. Share it with someone you’d like to play with!
